Structural Steel Reinforcement for Concrete Foundations
Davis Welding and Fabrication manufactured and installed 90 metal boxes required for precision structural reinforcement for a heavy industrial machine foundation at Jaws Buckets, Archerfield, Brisbane.
Client: Terazzo Concrete Construction / Jaws Buckets manufacturing facility
Project description:
Davis Welding and Fabrication was engaged by Principal Project Manager, Terazzo Concrete Construction, to provide precision structural reinforcement for a new heavy-duty machine foundation.
The foundation was designed to support a high-precision hole-boring machine used to create specialised holes in massive mining equipment buckets, some weighing up to 60 tonnes
The project required the manufacture and installation of 90 custom steel boxes designed to be embedded within the concrete. These embedded components were essential for the structural integrity of the foundation. They ensure correct preparation for the future mounting of heavy steel plates upon which the buckets would be place while the multihole-boring machine operates.
Our work formed a critical, mid-stage component of this demanding commercial concrete construction project.
Challenges – Structural Steel Reinforcement
The primary challenge was the absolute necessity for zero movement or deviation in the machine foundation. Any movement or shift in the foundation post-installation would lead to errors in the boring process, compromising the high-value mining components.
Therefore, the dimensional tolerances of the 90 steel boxes and their pin-point location accuracy within the concrete were paramount. The project’s success hinged on the perfect placement of these components to distribute immense static and dynamic loads and guarantee the long-term, high-precision operation of the end-user’s machinery.
How did Davis Welding and Fabrication Overcome the Challenges?
Davis Welding and Fabrication overcame these challenges through meticulous attention to detail, robust quality control, and on-site collaboration. To ensure the dimensional tolerances were met, we implemented a rigorous in-house fabrication process, where every one of the 90 custom steel boxes was manufactured and checked against specifications.
On-site, placement accuracy was achieved by working closely with Terazzo Concrete Construction and a surveyor engaged for this stage of the project. This three-way partnership allowed us to establish and maintain pin-point elevation and location for each embedded box.
We further guaranteed accuracy by implementing a multi-stage hold-point verification process, measuring and checking all aspects of the installation at each critical stage before the final concrete pour.
Project Result
Our work successfully formed a componet to the vital sub-structure necessary for the new machine foundation. By manufacturing the steel boxes to exact specifications and ensuring their flawless installation, Davis Welding and Fabrication provided the necessary structural rigidity and precision alignment required by the engineering design.
The project supported a perfectly prepared, concrete foundation, protecting the client’s investment in the machine, and guaranteeing Jaws Buckets’ ability to conduct high-precision drilling for their multi-ton mining equipment. Our essential contribution contributed to the foundation’s integrity, securing the long-term performance and reliability of the end-user’s core industrial process.
