Industrial Metal Detector Installation
Davis Welding and Fabrication was engaged to carry out an industrial metal detector installation at a rendering plant, modifying an existing conveyor system to meet the detector’s technical requirements.
Project Overview
The client required a metal detector, supplied by OFI Weigh & Inspection Solutions, to be integrated into an existing production conveyor. For the detector to function correctly, a compliant metal-free zone had to be established around the aperture. This meant the conveyor itself needed significant modification before the unit could be installed.
The Challenge
Standard conveyor components contain metal, which interferes with detector sensitivity. Creating a metal-free zone required redesigning the section of conveyor passing through the aperture — replacing conventional components with non-metallic alternatives capable of supporting the belt under production conditions.
Our Solution
Using 3D modelling software, our team designed a series of nylon rails and bridges to support the conveyor belt through the metal-free zone. Fabricating all components beforehand allowed the on-site installation to proceed efficiently, without delays waiting on parts or rework.
This kind of preparation is typical of how we approach complex projects and equipment integration work, particularly in food and industrial processing environments where downtime has a direct cost.
The Result
The installation was completed on schedule. The conveyor was operational and ready for production on time, and the client was satisfied with both the quality of the work and how the project was managed.
